Privacy Policy

1. Who we are

PriceBee (“PriceBee”, “we”, “us”), operating the website pricebee.co.za, is a South African price-comparison service covering retail products, cars and property. PriceBee is the responsible partyas defined in the Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (“POPIA”) in respect of the personal information described in this policy.

2. What personal information we collect

  • Account information: your email address and name (if provided) when you register, and your chosen plan and billing status (Free, Pro or Business).
  • Product submissions: product links (URLs) you submit to add products to the catalogue, associated with your account for quota purposes.
  • Price alert preferences: the products you track, your target prices and your notification channel preferences (email, and WhatsApp on Pro).
  • Usage information: anonymous browse events and usage analytics (pages viewed, searches performed, approximate device/browser type) used in aggregate to improve the service. These analytics are not used to build a profile tied to your identity.
  • Browser extension data: as described in section 3 below.
  • Payment status: subscription and payment status received from our payment processor, PayFast. We do not collect or store your card details.

3. Browser extension disclosure

The PriceBee SA browser extension, when installed and enabled, reads the product title, EAN/barcode and page URL of shopping pages you visit so it can show you a price comparison for that product across South African retailers. To help grow the catalogue, the extension may submit product-page URLs to PriceBee.

  • No browsing history is stored against your identity. Product-page URLs submitted by the extension are processed to identify products, not to track you.
  • The extension does not read pages that are not product/shopping pages.
  • No extension data is ever sold to anyone.

4. Purpose and lawful basis (purpose limitation)

We collect and process personal information only for the following specific, explicitly defined and lawful purposes, in line with POPIA's purpose-limitation principle:

  • creating and administering your account and subscription;
  • providing price comparisons, price history, Honey Scores and deal scores;
  • sending you the price alerts you have asked for;
  • enforcing plan quotas and preventing abuse of the service;
  • processing subscription payments via PayFast;
  • improving the service using aggregated, anonymised analytics; and
  • complying with legal obligations under South African law.

We will not process your personal information for a purpose incompatible with the above without your consent, and we collect no more information than is needed for these purposes (minimality).

5. We do not sell your personal information

PriceBee does not sell, rent or trade your personal information to third parties. Aggregated market analytics made available on Business plans never contain personal information.

6. Payments

Subscription payments are processed by PayFast (payfast.co.za), a licensed South African payment processor. Your card details are captured and stored by PayFast, not by PriceBee. PayFast's own privacy policy applies to information you provide to it during checkout.

7. Cookies

We use a small number of cookies and similar technologies: strictly necessary cookies to keep you signed in and remember your preferences, and first-party analytics cookies to measure anonymous usage of the site. We do not use third-party advertising cookies. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings; strictly necessary cookies are required for signed-in features to work.

8. Security safeguards

We take appropriate, reasonable technical and organisational measures to secure the integrity and confidentiality of personal information as required by section 19 of POPIA, including encryption in transit (HTTPS/TLS), access controls limiting who can access personal information, hardened server infrastructure, and regular review of our safeguards. If we have reasonable grounds to believe your personal information has been accessed or acquired by an unauthorised person, we will notify the Information Regulator and affected data subjects as required by section 22 of POPIA.

9. Retention

We keep personal information only for as long as it is needed for the purposes above or as required by law. Account information is retained while your account is active and deleted or anonymised within a reasonable period after account closure, save for records we must keep for legal, billing or tax purposes. Anonymous analytics are retained in aggregate form only.

10. Your rights as a data subject

Under POPIA you have the right to:

  • Access — request confirmation that we hold personal information about you and request a copy of it;
  • Correction — request that inaccurate, irrelevant, out-of-date or incomplete information be corrected;
  • Deletion — request that your personal information be deleted or destroyed where we are no longer entitled to retain it;
  • Objection — object, on reasonable grounds, to the processing of your personal information, and object at any time to direct marketing;
  • Complaint — lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator (see section 11).

To exercise any of these rights, email support@pricebee.co.za. We will respond within a reasonable time and may need to verify your identity before acting on a request.

If you believe we have processed your personal information in breach of POPIA, you may lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator:

PriceBee links to third-party retailer, dealer and property sites. Once you follow such a link, the third party's own privacy policy applies. We are not responsible for the privacy practices of third-party sites.

13. Changes to this policy

We may update this policy from time to time. The effective date above reflects the latest version. Material changes will be highlighted on the site. Continued use of PriceBee after a change takes effect constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
